Homecoming 2010
Homecoming was held on Sunday, July 11.  There were more than 150 people in attendance for the event.  The keynote speaker this year was Yvonne Rouse Kelly (alumnus '55-'69).  Yvonne spoke on her experience at the homewhile growing up here, and obstacles that she grew to overcome, as well as the many friends she made.
Opportunity was given for each alumni to share a special memory they have of their lives while growing up at the Home.  Former members of the concert choir and other alumni joined together to provide special music. A memorial service was given for the alumni who has passed since the last meeting.
    George Stevenson, alumnus '42-'52
    Evelyn Herring Cass, alumnae '52-'63
    Joyce Thigpen Cahoon, '49-'52

Earlier during the year, it was decided to contribute to the Children's Home's 90th anniversary celebraton by purchasing a black granite memorial bench to be placed on the new patio at the recently renovated Heritage Hall, the former dining hall.  The bench was inscribed with the names of two young boys who were killed by lightning while they were living at the Home. As part of a dedication service for the memorial bench, Mr. Alfred Rich (alumnus '25-'31) gave the historical significance of the event that led to the establishment of  the Griffin/Watson Memorial. Mr. Rich was one of the three boys who were caught in the lightning storm that day so long ago.
A catered lunch by Parker's Barbecue, Wilson was served in Whitley Center.  The balance of the afternoon was spent reminiscing with friends of days gone by.
As has become a tradition at the close of the festivities, several of the "boys" cleared out the tables and chairs and prepared for a little basketball.  This year, the "old boys" invited some of the current residents of the home to play a little one on one.
It was joyous homecoming celebration, with plans already in the works for next year's meeting.
